I have recently been getting phone calls from the families of inmates at various county jails, asking me if there is a way to get their loved out of jail early because of the COVID-19 crisis. We know that the close quarters and lack of cleaning materials and medical care create a special risk for those incarcerated at this time.
Because of this unique situation, and because of actions taken by Gov. Whitmer, there is a mechanism that will allow for some inmates to be eligible for early release from the county jail. This does not apply to those requesting early release from the Michigan Department of Corrections.
